Getting nail clippers sharpened – when it's worth it and when it's not

Good nail scissors are not a disposable item. They can be resharpened and, with good care, will last for decades.

But before you send them in: in many cases the scissors are not blunt at all. They are simply out of adjustment.

First check: blunt or just stiff?

Both cases feel similar, but they need completely different solutions.

Signs of a genuinely blunt cutting edge:

• The scissors crush the nail instead of cutting through it
• The nail splinters or frays at the cut
• The cut works in the middle but fails at the tip

Signs of a problem at the pivot:

• The scissors are stiff or catch when opening and closing
• The blades wobble sideways against each other
• The movement feels rough or gritty

In the second case, sharpening will not help. Here the screw – called the „Nagel“ (nail) in Solingen – is either too tight or too loose, or there is dirt in the joint.

The simple self-help

1. Clean the joint thoroughly, remove soap residue and nail dust
2. Dry it completely
3. Put a tiny drop of oil into the joint and move the scissors several times
4. If the screw is too loose, tighten it minimally – really only minimally

Very often the scissors are fine again afterwards. An overtightened screw, on the other hand, makes even the sharpest blade unusable.

Why you should not sharpen nail scissors yourself

With kitchen scissors a sharpening stone may work. With nail or cuticle scissors it does not – for two reasons:

The hollow grind. The inner faces of the blades are slightly curved inwards. This reduces friction and ensures that the two halves touch at one point only. Anyone who grinds this surface flat destroys exactly that.

The twist. The two halves of the scissors are twisted against each other in such a way that they meet only at the upper cutting edge. This geometry is set by the grinder when straightening them by hand. It cannot be restored with household means.

And the tricks from the internet? Cutting aluminium foil or pulling sandpaper through the scissors does not sharpen them. It merely removes the burr and works better briefly – but wears the cutting edge down even further in the process.

What can be resharpened – and what cannot

What is decisive is how the two halves are joined:

• Screw joint – the scissors can be taken apart, sharpened and readjusted. A service is possible.
• Riveted joint – cannot be taken apart. Resharpening is usually not worthwhile, and readjusting is not possible at all.

That is precisely why the screw joint is one of the most important quality features when buying.

Cutting edges with toothing – on thinning scissors, for instance – also cannot be resharpened. The toothing cannot be restored without destroying its function.

And one more note: a key-cutting shop or a DIY store machine is not suitable for nail scissors. You need a hand that knows the hollow grind.

We offer resharpening as a chargeable service. Depending on the instrument, the price is between 15 and 25 euros. The range results from the effort involved and the design: simple nail scissors are done more quickly than fine cuticle scissors or a nipper with double lever action.

How it works:

1. You enquire about the service – via our contact form or by e-mail to info@nagelzange.de, ideally with a photo of the instrument.
2. We check whether resharpening is worthwhile and tell you the price.
3. We provide you with a return label.
4. You send the instrument in and please state the value of the goods when you do.
5. Processing takes three to four weeks.
6. You receive your instrument back sharpened and straightened.

Why we ask about the value of the goods: should anything go wrong in transit or during processing, compensation is based on the value you have stated. So please state it realistically – especially with old heirlooms or high-quality instruments from Solingen.

If processing is not possible – with toothed thinning scissors, riveted models or heavily rusted instruments, for example – we will let you know beforehand. That saves you waiting time and unnecessary costs.

Is it worth it at all?

With cheap, riveted drugstore scissors: no. The service costs more than the instrument.

With high-quality scissors from Solingen: almost always. You pay a fraction of the price of a new pair and get back an instrument that cuts like it did on the first day. That is precisely where the economic sense of a good instrument lies – and the ecological sense along with it.

How to keep the scissors sharp for longer

• Dry them after every use – moisture in the joint is the greatest enemy
• Occasionally a drop of oil on the screw
• Nail scissors only for nails, cuticle scissors only for skin
• Never cut paper, adhesive tape, plasters or hair with them
• Do not carry them loose in a toiletry bag – the tips suffer
• Never work with force: if something jams, something else is wrong

Conclusion

Check the joint first – in many cases that solves the problem. If the cutting edge really is blunt, put the scissors in expert hands rather than experimenting yourself.

And if the scissors are riveted and no longer cut: that is the moment to invest in a pair that can be repaired.
