Stainless, nickel-plated, stainless steel – what's the difference?

“Stainless”, “stainless steel”, “nickel-plated”, “INOX” – a lot is written on nail instruments, and the terms are often mixed up. Yet they decide durability, sharpness and even tolerability.

Here is the classification in simple words.

Stainless steel (INOX)

The standard for high-quality nail instruments. What matters is the chromium content: from around 10.5 per cent, an invisible passive layer forms on the surface that protects the steel against corrosion and renews itself.

“INOX”, by the way, is simply the French word for stainless – not a higher standard, but the same thing.

Important: stainless is not always the same as stainless. There are dozens of alloys with very different properties. The decisive point with scissors and nippers is whether the steel can be hardened.

Why hardness makes the difference

A cutting edge has to be hard, otherwise it yields as it cuts and goes blunt quickly. Only certain types of steel can be hardened – and the hardness comes from the carbon content.

From this follows the conflict of aims that runs through the whole industry: more carbon means more hardness and more sharpness, but less corrosion resistance. Good instrument steels are the balanced compromise between the two – and that is exactly where a workshop's know-how lies.

A soft, highly rust-resistant steel makes a pair of scissors that never rusts and never really cuts. Having both at once is the art.

Nickel-plated – and what that means

Nickel-plated instruments are not made of stainless steel. They have a body of simpler metal onto which a thin layer of nickel has been applied. That provides shine and a degree of protection.

This has consequences:

• The layer is finite. If it is worn through or scratched, the metal underneath corrodes.
• Not resharpenable. Grinding removes the coating.
• Nickel allergy. Nickel is one of the most common contact allergens of all. With prolonged skin contact that can become relevant.

Nickel plating is therefore typical of instruments without a cutting edge – tweezers, pushers, simple case fittings – and of budget goods.

Carbon steel

Not stainless, but extremely hard and very sharp. That is why scalpel blades are often made of carbon steel – they are sterile single-use products, so corrosion plays no part.

For instruments intended for repeated use it is unsuitable.

• Hardened stainless steel – the right choice for nail scissors, cuticle scissors and nippers. Durable, hygienic, resharpenable.
• Nickel-plated – cheaper, visually appealing, limited service life, relevant for allergies.
• Carbon steel – only sensible for single-use blades.

How to recognise good quality

• A screwed joint instead of a rivet – adjustable and resharpenable
• Cleanly finished edges – no burrs, no rough spots
• A stamped company mark
• A clear statement of material – anyone who writes only “steel” or “metal” usually has a reason
• A statement of origin – the name Solingen is legally protected

Conclusion

For anything that cuts, there is no way past hardened stainless steel. Nickel-plated goods are not bad goods – but they are a different product class, and the price difference has a factual reason.
