A weighty, black blade, paired with birch handle scales as bright as sand on a sunny day, engraved with a proud lion, requires courage to wield it to one's face.

This courage is what the blade represents. It was inspired by Theodore Roosevelt's "Citizenship in a Republic" speech. An excerpt from this speech, known as "The Man in the Arena," is engraved in full on the back of the blade.

The speech states that it is not the critic who counts, but that all recognition belongs to the man in the arena who takes many risks.
