Callus rasp

A callus rasp is the safe middle ground between a callus plane and a file: it removes noticeably more than a file, but more slowly than a plane – and that is exactly why it is hard to take off too much. For use at home, that is the decisive advantage.

Rasp, plane or file?

  • Rasp – medium removal rate, forgiving in use. The right choice for regular care and for anyone who is uneasy with a blade.
  • Callus plane – removes the most, works with a replaceable blade and demands the steadiest hand.
  • Callus file – for light hard skin and for smoothing after a rasp or plane.

Dry or wet rasping?

Both work, but not equally well. Dry, you see better how much you are taking off and the rasp bites harder – but it creates dust. After a foot bath the skin is soft, which is gentler, but it is easy to lose the sense of how deep you already are. If in doubt: work on slightly damp skin and dry it now and then to judge the result.

How to use it

  • Work in one direction, do not saw back and forth.
  • Take the callus down over several sessions rather than one – hard skin builds up over months and does not have to disappear in a single evening.
  • Do not go down to the soft skin. A thin layer of hard skin is protection, not a flaw.
  • Apply cream afterwards, ideally one containing urea.

When not to do it yourself

Never on cracks, wounds or inflamed skin. With diabetes, circulatory problems or reduced sensation in the foot, callus removal belongs in podiatric hands.

Care

After every use, tap out the residue, rinse the rasp and let it dry completely. Stainless steel rasps can be disinfected and last for years with the right care.
